Dismantling the deceptively pristine image of the high-tech industry, The Cleanroom Paradox is an 11-minute essay film that exposes the systemic suppression of information about occupational and toxic hazards at semiconductor production sites.

Jin, a former Samsung factory worker, was exposed to unsafe working conditions without adequate health precautions. Her employer failed to acknowledge these risks, leaving her to face the devastating consequences—a kidney cancer diagnosis.

The film features a gradually disintegrating custom print of Jin, accompanied by a video documenting its creation. This video essay overlays her personal account with expert testimonies, shedding light on the industry’s concealed dangers.

Interweaving stories and fibers, the ink used for the print is made from chemically dissolved smartphones. Mirroring the semiconductor industry’s etching processes, this toxic ink will slowly corrode the image over time, peeling away layers to reveal Jin’s story already inscribed beneath the surface.

But this is more than just bodily exposure—the film investigates the hidden toxicity behind semiconductor manufacturing, tracing the labor required to shape high-tech products. It shifts focus toward the industry’s key players in the Middle West, calling for accountability.

Fates like Jin’s are not isolated cases and can be traced across the industry in the Eastern as well as Western Hemisphere.
